The new 2011 Chevrolet Volt is GM's new take on an electric vehicle. This new Chevrolet Electric Vehile will hit showrooms at the end of 2010. The Volt is an electric car that uses gas to create its own electricity. Simply plug in the Volt overnight, and its ready to run on pure electric charge for up to 40 miles. Once the charge is depleted and is not recharged, the Volt uses a range-extending gas generator that produces energy to run for hundreds of miles on a single tank. So first, the vehicle runs on electricity from its battery, then it runs on electricity it creates from gas.
The 2011 Chevrolet Volt will recharge via a home wall plug with a full charge taking up to 6-7 hrs. A 240-volt charging system will be an option for owners vs. a standard wall plug, decreasing the total charge time in half for a total of 2-3 hours charge time. These systems can be installed in a person's home. The battery pack is anticipated to last up to 10 years or 150,000 miles in the car. After the battery's life in the Volt, it can possibly be used as a home-energy storage device once removed from the car.
Owners with smart-phones can take advantage of the OnStar mobile app to access their vehicle's current electric range and fuel efficiency. Plus, you can look up the car battery's charge level or even check on the time that your Volt will be fully charged. Other commands that can be accessed remotely: unlocking doors and remote start
